Glossary of Terms Associated with Taxonomic Keys

Ab1-9: refers to abdominal segments 1-9

aedeagus: penis or male copulatory organ; an internal structure that oftened needs to be extruded

apical: farthest from the body core

apical or 3rd tarsal segment: the tarsal segment farthest from the body.

basal, proximal or 1st tarsal segement: the tarsal segment closest to the body.

cercus (pl. cerci): terminal paired appendages (tails) at the posterior end of the abdomen.

coxa,: the basal segment that connects the leg to the thorax.

epiproct: a raised (generally), unpaired sclerotic structure attached to the 10th tergite of the male and used in mating.

femur (pl. femora): the large basal segment of the leg, connected to the thorax by the coxa

glossa: paired inner lobes of the labium.

labial palp: feeler-like appendages on each side of the labium

labium: the lower lip

labrum: the upper lip

paraglossa: paired outer lobes of trhe labium.

occiput: region of the head between and to posterior of compound eyes

sterna (sing. sternum): exoskelital covering of a ventral (underside) abdominal segment

tarsus (pl. tarsi): the distal (last, or farthest from the body) three parts of the leg (not counting the claws).

tergite (pl. tergae): exoskelital covering of a dorsal (backside or upper) abdominal segment.

thorax (thoracic): the middle part of the three part insect body plan (head, thorax, abdomen); legs are attached to this section (wings on the adults).

venter (ventral): the "underside" or "belly"side of the insect body.
